About Calstock Estate

The estate was established in 1831 when Lieutenant Pearson Foote of the Royal Navy received a land grant of 3,500 acres in the Deloraine area. He named the property “Calstock” after his family’s estate in Devon, England. Foote utilized convict labor and handmade bricks to construct the initial homestead, marking the beginning of Calstock’s development. Calstock developed into a thriving sheep grazing property, capitalising on the fertile soils and temperate climate of the Meander Valley. The original house was single storey in a U shape with the two back wings seen today.

Calstock Estate, located near Deloraine in northern Tasmania, is one of Australia’s most significant Georgian-style homesteads. Its history reflects the colonial development of the region and its transformation over nearly two centuries.

John Field acquired Calstock

In 1853, John Field acquired Calstock and significantly expanded the estate. The existing residence was extended to a standard befitting a wealthy family. The front section of the house was replaced with the two-storey residence you see today with 16foot ceilings, solid cedar doors, architraves, skirtings and shutters, fine plaster moldings, mantlepieces and brass chandeliers. The Field family, prominent landholders in Tasmania, retained ownership for over a century. During their tenure, Calstock became renowned for its agricultural pursuits, particularly in breeding thoroughbred racehorses. Notably, the estate was the birthplace of Malua, the 1884 Melbourne Cup winner, and Sheet Anchor, the 1885 winner.

Various Transformations

After changing hands several times post-1972, Calstock underwent various transformations. In the early 2000s, it operated as Peppers Calstock, a boutique hotel offering luxury accommodations. More recently, the estate has been restored by previous owners as a residence, with efforts to preserve its historical architecture and gardens.

Today

Today, Calstock Estate on over 32 acres stands as a testament to Tasmania’s rich colonial heritage both as a heritage-listed property and a living part of Tasmania’s rural history. Reflecting the architectural elegance of the Georgian era and the region’s historical significance in Australia’s pastoral and equine industries.
